Hearing Pictures brought together artwork from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century from the permanent collection of the Tang Museum to explore the relationship between hearing and seeing.

 

It featured traditionally 'silent' artwork, such as drawing, painting and printmaking, and invited gallery-goers to consider the sounds the artworks evoked.

Displayed to suggest a musical score, the installation also featured a simple recording station where visitors could record the sounds they imagined. The recordings are archived on the Tang website and later incorporated into a new sound piece created by Skidmore College students Gregory Carter '13 and Adrienne Fuller '13 for the Tang Museum exhibition Elevator Music 22: Seeing Sounds. A series of public programs accompanied the exhibition, inviting regional musicians to respond sonically to the installation.
