Organized alongside the ten-year anniversary of the United States' 'War on Terror', Behind Those Planes Are the Stars brought together artworks and items from the Tang Museum Collection and Skidmore College Special Collections to reflect on the incessant presence of war within American history.

The exhibition featured artworks from the eighteenth to twenty-first centuries that addressed the lives of individuals directly affected.  Many of the artists were also closely connected: photographer W. Eugene Smith was a war correspondent during the Second World War and Robert Andrew Parker and Larry Rivers were both war veterans.

It also included a selection of ephemera from Skidmore College alumna Elizabeth Fisher Adams '29, who worked as an ambulance driver, social worker and relief worker throughout the Second World War.
